Jean Maurice Eugène Clément Cocteau (5 July 1889 – 11 October 1963) was a French Poet, novelist, dramatist, designer, artist and filmmaker, member of the Académie francaise and The Royal Academy of Belgium. Cocteau was openly gay. His muse and lover for over 25 years was actor Jean Marais. After Cocteau's death, Marais wrote a memoir of Cocteau, L'Inconcevable Jean Cocteau, attributing authorship to "Cocteau-Marais."
