Ghost Stories: Night Procession of the Hundred Demons
(Kaidan hyakki yagyô)
c. 1836
This
series shows male and female genitalia in the guise if various demons. Each print bears a title, many of which are
bawdy and often pun the demons’ names. Although the individual prints are unsigned,
the wrapper is signed “Ichimyôkai Hodoyoshi
ga”, a signature Kuniyoshi is known to have used on
erotic prints. This series is not listed
in ‘Robinson’ by Basil William Robinson (Victoria and Albert Museum, London,
1961). The prints in this series are
each about 5 by 3.5 inches (13 by 9 centimeters), a size known as koban.

I talked to my wife, my favorite subject, about the idea of taking

to work around these minor set backs but are worried about the life
left of my aging camera. Don’t get me wrong my camera has been a
workhorse for the last ten years but I fear the shutter will not last the
length of the project. The minor set backs we have had to date are
some small lights we would really like to replace. In the event we
